The Pierre is one of the most beautiful houses I’ve seen in a long time and its view over the San Juan Archipelago is incredible! The house celebrates the materiality of the site and that combined with a green roof makes the house blend with the surrounding, making it almost invisible from certain angles. I’m having a hard time finding anything wrong with the exterior or the interior for that matter. The interiors combination of older looking, inviting furniture stands in wonderful contrast with the raw concrete walls. Well what can you say, Olson Kundig Architects has done a wonderful job! Enjoy lots more photos after the jump.

[…] Nestled between giant boulders and overlooking the San Juan Archipelago, this fascinating looking house comes from Olson Kundig Architects and is also known as the Pierre residence. We consider this project to be a beautiful and inspiring example of how to combine natural elements with contemporary building designs. The Pierre house was constructed more or less using local materials which is also why it seems to integrate so well in its landscape. The concrete and glass create a nice contrast and together with the rocky formations form one of the most intriguing house facades we’ve seen lately. Even though the exterior could lead one to believe this residence has a modern indoor design, the furniture elements come to negate this first impression. The mix of vintage and natural details creates highly original arrangements.- via BTC […]

i could live there for the rest of my life!
From outside it looks like an unearthed nuclear bunker. I fail to see the “blend with nature” in that. When first seeing it I expected too see skeletons and gas masks and huge iron tables indise. The interior is indeed really nice though.
And if we’re ever invaded by Japan (or heaven forbid, China), its a ready made pillbox.
I think the house would have looked more appealing if the shape of the house was not straight-up square-ish with solid lines. It didn’t really blend too well, rather it stood out. But love the interiors!
